Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott went to her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two other job. She planned to become a high school English teacher. It was impossible to realize her dream, however, when after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. She began her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her work in live poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. In a Roots performance, she made her debut as an artist. She then secured collaborations, which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. In the Canada tour for Rent, the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was also the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
